Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of characters who will branch out from the main group to embark on their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear unsuited, but the events of the third episode show why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the northern area and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • However, their reputation as key figures in House Halovar could assist the group enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to journey toward the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Explorers and Planners tables.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which characters will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
