This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government. A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life. "Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed. The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the New Electoral Agreement According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved. Broader Government Discussions Underway In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising. Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
