Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
